The autumn SHAC meeting for 2016 is being arranged for Saturday 12 November at the Royal Institution, London. The meeting will not address any particular theme but will consist of a succession of papers on topics appropriate to the Society’s interests.

It is with pleasure that I am able to announce that Lyke de Vries (PhD candidate, Radboud University Nijmegen) will take over my duties in maintaining the content of this website. The Council and SHAC as a whole are very grateful for her willingness to step forward in this regard, and we wish her all the best for her work in keeping the website up to date as well as for her PhD research.
The Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry established the Partington Prize in memory of Professor James Riddick Partington, the Society’s first Chairman. It is awarded every three years for an original and unpublished essay on any aspect of the history of alchemy or chemistry. The prize consists of five hundred pounds (£500) if awarded to a single essay of sufficient merit. Alternatively, it may be divided, or not awarded at all.
The 2016 Oxford Seminar in the History of Alchemy and Chemistry will take place at the Maison Francaise d’Oxford (2-10 Norham Rd, OX2 6SE) between 3pm-5pm on the following Wednesdays. The seminar is free of charge, and anyone with an interest in the history of alchemy, chemistry, medicine or the sciences is invited to attend. The format is two papers followed by a Questions & Answers session. Participants are also invited to join us for a drink afterwards, and/or dinner with the speakers.
The British Society for the History of Pharmacy is organising a joint lecture with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society: ‘Henry Wellcome, Pharmacist’ will be given by Ross MacFarlane, Research Engagement Officer, Wellcome Library. Hosted by the ARTECHNE research group, the annual postgraduate workshop of the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry (SHAC) will take place at Utrecht University in 2016. Fostering exchange among historians of alchemy and chemistry, the workshop offers postgraduate students and early-career researchers the opportunity to share ideas, explore methodological issues and network in a stimulating atmosphere.
