FAQ on membership fees, options for payment and changes to membership details

The membership year for SHAC corresponds to the publication year for Ambix, the quarterly peer reviewed journal of the Society, so the annual fee covers from 1st January to 31st December of each year. 

SHAC has recently introduced several alternative ways for members to pay their membership fees, including the facility to set up an annual recurring payment. 

When is the renewal date for my subscription?

There is a slight difference in timing of payments between those who have chosen an annual recurring payment and those who have not made that choice. This difference does not affect what members receive during a year,

If you have not taken out an annual recurring payment to the Society you will receive a payment reminder email in the December of your current membership year. You should pay promptly after receipt of this payment reminder, ideally by the end of February, irrespective of when you first joined the Society

If you have taken out an annual recurring payment, your renewal payment will be taken from your card or PayPal account on the first and subsequent anniversaries of when you set up the recurring payment.

How may I pay for my membership fee?

You may pay for your fee by means of your credit card, your debit card or through your PayPal account. If none of these payment methods suit you, you may pay by cheque or by bank transfer.

If you choose to pay by credit card, debit card or PayPal and have been a member for more than one year, you may set up a recurring annual payment or just pay for one year at a time. To reduce administration costs, SHAC would prefer that you set up a recurring annual payment. Note, this option is only available to members after their first year of membership.

How do I pay for my membership fee using my credit or debit card?

You can choose to use your credit card to either pay a one-off fee for one year or you can set up a recurring annual payment. You do not have to have a PayPal account to use your credit card, even though SHAC uses PayPal facilities to enable you to use your credit card. Simply decide whether you wish to pay a one-off or recurring payment and select the appropriate button for your subscription rate on the renewal site  https://www.ambix.org/renew-membership/ . This will take you to a page run by PayPal which will collect the necessary details of you and your card and enable you to make the payment. PayPal will then charge your credit card for the amount and will pay SHAC the amount less a small charge. The transaction will appear on your credit card statement as “Card payment to PayPal, SHAC”.

Do I need to have a PayPal account to use my credit or debit card?

You do not have to have a PayPal account. SHAC uses Pay Pal facilities to take a credit or debit card payment from you. This means that PayPal will collect from you the details necessary so that PayPal can charge your card and ensure the card company can verify your details.

Please refer to this help sheet showing members how they can use the PayPal button to pay their subscription using their credit card, even if they don’t have a PayPal account, or have one that they don’t want to use. 

How do I pay for my membership fee using my PayPal account?

If you have an existing PayPal account, click on the relevant button on the payment form to choose between a one-year subscription or an annual recurring payment. You will be asked to log in to your PayPal account. Once there you may make your choice of subscription. PayPal will email you to confirm the type of subscription you have taken out and will also notify the Treasurer at SHAC of the payment.

How do I change or cancel a recurring annual payment?

In all cases, please contact the Treasurer of the Society (treasurer (AT) ambix.org) requesting the termination of your annual payment. Your request will be acknowledged and the necessary action taken by the Treasurer to cancel or change any future payments and to change your membership status within the society. You will be informed by email when this is completed.

If you have set this up through your PayPal account, you may log on to your PayPal account and click through to the settings page, then select payments  and click on pre-approved payments – this should show you a list of pre-approved payments. Select the payment to SHAC and make the necessary changes. (This information reflects the PayPal web pages as at November 2020).

How do I notify the Society of changes to my email and postal address?

It is important that you keep the Society informed of such changes as soon as possible, otherwise your next copy of Ambix will go astray and the Society may not be able to  keep you informed of various activities.

Select one option and complete the form presented to you. Your changes will be sent to the treasurer for inclusion in the data base of members.
